Over the past 40 years, I have collected nice pieces of North Carolina pottery my by different potters. I've always admired the blue glaze stoneware pieces for utilitarian purposes in my home and office. Stoneware pottery should be common place to find here in NC but nowadays, I don't find pieces like these often anymore. This vintage wide mouth cylinder vase is made of grey granite like stoneware. It looks like it might be Raku. It is signed Doug Smith, who is a well known potter in Asheville, NC. The inside of the vase has perfect finger groves and the vase has even thickness top to bottom. The vase has a tan/white matt glaze and glossy blue glaze and a zig-zag swipe in the glaze, down to the brown granite like or Raku clay. There is also a lavender/purple swipe at the top of the blue glaze. This is the perfect weed pot or a jar for artist paint brushes, or for pens and pencils. It measures 5 3/8" tall x 4" wide or 13.5 cm x 10 cm. The entire vase is in pristine like new condition with no imperfections or flaws. It is perfectly clean with no scratches, chips or cracks.
