Of all the pottery in my massive 40+ year pottery collection, some of the pottery pieces I admire the most are North Carolina pottery, which is where I live. There are hundreds of potteries in NC but only a handful have acquired great recognition over time. What I am seeing today is that those potteries, the one's who have been the focus of many pottery collectors, are falling by the wayside, as many other smaller localized potteries are now getting more of the spotlight.Look at Seagrove pottery for example. 15 years ago, the prices at auctions for their older wares became no longer affordable, but prices have dipped way down since then. Plus, you can only collect so much of Owen Coles pottery before you yearn for more diversity. Pottery diversity is what I look for, as well as professional work. I look at form, composition, skill level of design, and skill of glazes. I know how to look for these elements because I was an art pottery major in high school. Give me great looking weed pot any day and I will find the most perfect grasses and pods for that pot. This wheel thrown weed pot has perfect form and it is not an amateur piece of pottery. It has consistent, even, thickness and it is not fat or bulging or over weight. This is a raku pot and the glaze is very exceptional raku glaze that is speckled copper red. The black metallic lead glaze at the top has perfect drip lines. There are no big bubbles or inconsistencies in the glaze, with the exception of a couple of very tiny glaze pops that occur naturally during the firing process.Medium in size, this weed pot is 8" tall x 3 1/4" wide or 20 cm x 8 cm. The entire vase is in pristine clean like new condition with no imperfections or flaws. There are no scratches, scuffs, chips, or signs of wear. The bottom is signed BSP. This is the signature for Barking Spider Pottery in Penland NC, about an hour outside of Asheville.
