Rose celluloid jewelry has been made for over 100 years but most of the rose celluloid jewelry that you'll find is from the 1950s or 1960s but this pin was made in the 1920-1930 era.
 
Celluloid jewelry over the past 100 years was made mainly in Germany, Japan, and the US. There were very nice quality pieces made after WWII, but finding pieces like this pin that were made in the 1920-1930 era is very difficult today. It takes a trained eye to know the difference between pieces that are really old, and pieces that are more recent. The main difference is not in the celluloid itself, but in the designs and settings. 
 
This Victorian bar pin was made in the late Edwardian period, around 1915-1920. The pin has 3 roses set in circular gold gilt metal frames of leaves. The leaves were machine etched to catch the light and were dipped in gold gilt. The color of the celluloid is also a very old color. The color is a muted shade of cinnamon orange and the roses are hand carved - not molded. If you look closely at the tips of the flower petals, you can see what you might think are flakes or chips but it is simply from the knife when the roses were carved. This is something you dont often see - old celluloid roses that were actually hand carved. This pin was most likely made in Germany, not Japan or the US.
 
Medium in size, the pin is 2" long x 3/4" tall. The roses are perfect with no chips or other imperfections. There are minor hints of gold wear commensurate with age. The pin has the original fine working C clasp.
