Made in the early 1970s, this vintage bamboo bird basket is actually a very hard basket to find today. It was not made in China. It was made in the Philippines in a weaving technique traditional in the South Pacific. The handle is a woven flattened tube of natural split bamboo and mahogany dyed canes. The basket body features 2 styles of weaving techniques of x's with dark brown dyed canes on he bottom section. On the bottom area, the weaving pattern produces is a unique geometric pattern that is a technique first done in Africa. This was a very complicated basket to make. Look at the head of the bird and notice how the beak is solid bamboo and was split to form the shape of the head first. Shaping the head was not an easy task. The basket also has a braided foot to make it sit flat.I've had this basket stored away for several decades to preserve it's integrity. The entire basket is in pristine clean like new condition with virtually no signs of wear, imperfections, or flaws. You might be able to pick out a couple of minor flaws under serious close inspection but it very much like the day it was made. The basket is large at 12" tall with the handle. It is 10" long x 8 1/2" wide. The basket portion is about 5" deep.
