From the 1950's, these signed Renoir Matisse copper enamel earrings are a very uncommon pair. Earrings in this design were very limited in production and there was no pattern name. It has been referred to as representative of sea life forms, but what makes this pair so uncommon is the rare enamel glaze technique.
The technique used here was only used for this design. The domed oval cabs have glistening metallic gold backgrounds, flecked with black and translucent yellow gold dots. These yellow gold dots glow as if they are lit up from within because the dots are stiffly beaded and raised in texture as you can see in my close-up photo. This technique was extremely difficult to accomplish, and Matisse never used the technique on other designs.
The tear drop frames are polished copper bars with black enamel inlay, behind the enamel cabs. The earrings are in exceptional condition with no imperfections or wear. The clips are tight and strong and both are signed Renoir Matisse. Exceptionally clean as well. They measure 1 1/2" long x 3/4" wide.
