Many years ago there was a jewelry company in Albuquerque, NM called Bell Trading Company. They started in 1935 and went out of business sometime in the 1980s. From copper mines in the southwest, they made an astronomical amount of copper jewelry.

In the 1950s, they had a small demand for copper cufflinks but they never made many designs of their own. The jewelry designs Bell Trading made were mostly American Indian motifs, symbols, etc. One of their ideas was to collect old copper pennies and make cufflinks out of them. How do I know this? Because the toggle mechanism on the cufflinks were made by Bell Trading and they were not sold to the public.

The cufflinks are made 1901 Indian Head solid copper pennies. What I admire about these pennies is the deep reddish orange hue of the copper. It is a type of copper that was only mined in the southwest US. Bell Trading also used this reddish orange copper in their jewelry, as opposed to other artists like Rebajes and Renoir Matisse who used German copper that is thicker and very brown in color.

But look : The 1901 coins were made of this reddish orange copper, of high purity, but the cufflink mechanisms were made in the 1950-1960 era of copper from a different mine in the southwest. They are darker in color, or a different purity of copper. It might not be of interest to you, but as a vintage copper jewelry researcher, I find it interesting that over the course of 50 years, the copper mines that in use changed, as well as the levels of purity.

I have not polished the coins. The Indian heads have some light to moderate wear and an aged patina but the outline impressions are still good but not like new. The pair is in pristine clean condition with no signs of damage, and no dirt or verdigris. The cufflinks are of course the size of regular penny, or 3/4" wide. The cufflinks are not signed.

Comes gift wrapped and shipped in a new luxury presentation cufflink box as pictured.
