Carnelian and Amethyst Pierced Gold Chandelier Ethnic Earrings
I find these ethnic vintage earrings extremely interesting. They are an exceptional hand crafted design made of gold filled wire and hand wrapped Carnelian and Amethyst gemstone nuggets.
The four loop design is the Gorgon Loop symbol, an ancient Northern European and Nordic symbol of protection from bad luck or evil spirits. Today this symbol has been transformed and is all out of whack. It is used on road signs in Nordic countries and was taken over by Apple as a key prompt.
I've owned these earrings since the early 1980s when I bought them from a lady making jewelry on the street in Morocco. I knew the Gorgon Loop symbol and could not figure out how she came to know it, as it was not Persian or Indian, but Nordic. Apparently, Europeans had a great influence in Morocco and somehow she knew this symbol. I tried to get someone to translate for me and ask her what the symbol meant to her. The translation I got back was just one word : Protection. This is correct : she did know what the Gorgon Loop symbol meant and incorporated in her jewelry designs!
I was later told by another vendor that her daughter made all of the beads from rough cut gems with a knife and drilled all the tiny holes with a needle. I was shocked at the amount of time and effort put into making these earrings!
Medium large in size, the earrings hang down 3" or 76 mm long. The Gorgon Loops are about 1 5/8" or 40 mm wide. The gemstone nuggets are about 3 mm.
The earrings have been safely stashed away and never worn for the past 30+ years. You are looking at the earrings exactly how I purchased them over 30 years ago.Notice the hand made ear wires; they are a long Persian style.
Both earrings are in pristine clean like new condition with no imperfections or flaws. There are no missing gems and the gold is clean bright. The gold wire wraps are a deep rose gold, probably 18kt to 22kt gold filled. The stiff gold metal wire has a light patina from age and looks to be gold plated.
Comes gift wrapped and shipped in a new luxury presentation earring box.
