Description
It is a little known fact that in the 1920s and 1930s, Japanese artists created some of the nicest Majolica wares ever made. Of course, they were copying styles of other countries, as they did with most everything they made. Finding exceptional pieces of Japanese Majolica wares today is very challenging. I have owned this vase planter for many decades and it has been in my hutch cabinet for over 30 years. I love the shape, the colors, and the textures.
The planter is ivory white ceramic with yellow gold and brown gold trim. The Majolica decor has berry colored flowers and brown gold scrolls. The flowers are cranberry red and indigo blue. I believe the blue flowers are meant to represent delphiniums as they were a very popular flower at the time. The bottom is signed with a 1930s Made in Japan stamp in black ink.
Medium large in size, the planter is about 7 1/2" long x 5 1/2" tall 3 3/4" wide or 19 cm x 13.3 cm x 9.3 cm. The entire planter is in excellent clean condition with no imperfections or flaws. There are no chips, cracks, scratches, or repairs. The interior and bottom has some light age staining and crazing. The exterior has some very light crazing as should be expected on ceramics this old.
